Capacitors — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between aluminum electrolytic and supercapacitors?

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors store charge between aluminum foils in an electrolyte and are sized in microfarads (μF) — they handle high voltage (up to 700V) and AC ripple in power supplies and inverters. Supercapacitors (EDLCs) store charge electrostatically at an electrolyte / activated-carbon interface and are sized in farads (F) — they offer very high capacitance (up to 3,400F) at low voltage (2.5-3V) and deliver high pulse current with 1M+ cycle life, used for energy buffering, regenerative braking, and short-duration UPS.

Are your capacitors automotive grade?

Yes. Snap-in and screw terminal aluminum electrolytic capacitors and hybrid capacitor lines are IATF16949 (automotive quality management) and AEC-Q200 (automotive passive component stress qualification) certified. Lot traceability and Certificates of Conformance are available on request — required documentation for Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive supply.

What is the service life of your aluminum electrolytic capacitors?

Standard snap-in series rated 105°C deliver 2,000 to 5,000 hours at full rated temperature, which translates to 100,000+ hours (>11 years) at 40°C ambient under derated voltage — the typical lifetime expected in a solar inverter or industrial UPS. Long-life series (10,000+ hour 105°C) are available for harsh environments. Send the application profile (ambient, ripple, voltage) for a Miner-rule life calculation.

Do you offer custom capacitor modules?

Yes. Custom capacitor banks for EV charging, solar storage, and UPS applications are built on snap-in or screw-terminal cells in series-parallel arrangements, with integrated balancing resistors and optional pre-charge / discharge networks. MOQ depends on bank rating; typical lead time is 6-10 weeks from electrical spec sign-off.

What voltage and capacitance ranges do you stock?

Snap-in: 10V to 700V, 39μF to 56,000μF, 85°C and 105°C. Screw terminal: 10V to 700V, 1,000μF to 680,000μF. Supercapacitors: 2.5V to 3.0V, 0.5F to 3,400F. Hybrid: 5V to 100V, 1μF to 1,000μF, 135°C. Common values stock in Los Angeles for same-day shipment; non-stock values typically 4-8 week lead time.

How do I get a datasheet and quote?

Email sales@tysonsupplychain.com or submit a quote at /quote with: voltage rating, capacitance, ripple current at rated frequency, ambient temperature, expected lifetime, and required form factor (snap-in / screw / can dimensions). We will return a datasheet recommendation, drop-in alternatives if relevant, and pricing at 1k / 10k / 100k quantities within 24 hours.
